What is SHUTi™?
Sleep Healthy Using the Internet™, or SHUTi for short, was created to help you overcome sleep problems and insomnia symptoms using techniques and strategies modeled after Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Referenced as “the best-studied program” by Harvard Health, SHUTi is designed to help retrain your body and mind for great sleep through six engaging Core strategy sessions. Unlike printed material, video collections, or recorded lectures, each online Core walks you, step-by-step, through exactly what you need to do to maximize your sleep improvements, now and for the future.
What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for insomnia?
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is a short course of therapy aimed at retraining your mind and body for great sleep. CBT-I is the preferred choice insomnia treatment according to the Clinical Guidelines of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the Center for Disease Control and the National Institutes of Health. Studies show CBT-I produces the same level of improvement as sleeping medications without the risk of dependency on pills or other adverse side effects. Instead, CBT helps you learn techniques to break the cycle of thoughts, feelings and behaviors that interfere with restful sleep. These powerful tools and knowledge produce a lasting and more permanent improvement in sleep patterns.
How long does the program take?
Once a week – for 6 weeks, you will complete one (1) Core online learning and strategy session. Each of these sequenced Core sessions includes about 40 minutes of engaging interactions, videos, quizzes and other helpful information designed to help you improve your sleep. The program also recommend you take 2 – 3 minutes each day to complete a short online Sleep Diary. Between Core sessions, you will practice the new strategies and techniques you have learned and incorporate them into your daily routine. The majority of SHUTi users complete the program with a total time investment of under 7 hours over a period of 6 weeks. To help you feel confident in your ability to maintain your improved sleep after the 6-week period, we provide you with additional weeks to use and review the program as part of your selected SHUTi subscription.
Is the program flexible? Do I have to complete it all at once?
The SHUTi program is designed to be completed online at your convenience and schedule. Keep in mind that the SHUTi program programmatically enforces at least a week between each of the sequenced Core learning sessions to ensure you have ample opportunities to practice the new techniques you’ve learned.
Can I Continue to Take My Sleep Medications While Using SHUTi?
When starting SHUTi, many people ask about medications. In published research studies, SHUTi has been found to be very effective whether medications are used or not. As a self-help program, SHUTi does not provide instructions regarding changing your medication regimen and you will not be asked to change or stop using your sleep medication. Instead, if you are interested in reducing or eliminating your medications, you should speak with your doctor, let him/her know you are using SHUTi, and talk about coming up with a plan on how best to do this.
Why can’t I log into SHUTi?
When logging in to SHUTi, it is best to type in your password manually. Keep in mind that passwords may contain a combination of lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. Passwords are also case-sensitive. If you copy and paste, you may pick up an extra space which the site interprets as a character and it will reject your login attempt.
When typing in your password, make certain to note between a zero (0), lower-case ohh (o) and upper-case ohh (O). Similarly, upper-case ell (L), lower-case ell (l), upper-case eye (I), lower-case eye (i), the number one (1), and exclamation mark (!)
To reset your password, go to the SHUTi login page and click Forgot Password? located in the center of login page directly beneath the password field. A new window will appear. Make sure to enter the email address you provided during your subscription registration. A password reset email with additional instructions will then be emailed to that address.

SHUTi has been designed to be as easy-to-use as possible, and our Frequently Asked Questions are always available online 24-x7. Most individuals can navigate the program successfully on their own, but if you need help, our trained Support Team professionals are available for your assistance. Who’s behind SHUTi?
After years of research studies and treating insomnia patients, Dr. Charles Morin, a leading authority on insomnia treatment, along with others in the field of sleep science, had no doubt that Cognitive Behavior Therapy for insomnia was effective. However, based on the number of people with insomnia, there were not nearly enough trained clinicians to provide CBT-I. So, he, along with a team of international experts in insomnia, behavior change, and digital health, created SHUTi to expand access to help for insomnia.
