Frequently Asked Questions
What is SHUTi™?
Sleep Healthy Using the Internet™, or SHUTi for short, was created to help you overcome insomnia using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for insomnia techniques. Referenced as “the best-studied program” by Harvard Health, SHUTi is designed to actively help retrain your body and mind for great sleep through six engaging Core strategy sessions. Unlike printed material, video collections, or recorded lectures, each online Core is personalized to your current sleep patterns and goals, and walks you, step-by-step, through exactly what you need to do to maximum your sleep improvements, now and for the future.
SHUTi is the only online CBT-I program with 5 published research RCT trials with positive sleep improvement results. And our most recent published scientific findings have shown evidence of success in broader populations with medical and psychiatric comorbidities, including cancer survivors and adults at-risk for depression; and the longest-term effects (e.g., sleep improvements lasted 1-year even after program access ended).
What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for insomnia?
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is a short course of therapy aimed at retraining your mind and body for great sleep. CBT-I is the preferred choice insomnia treatment according to the Clinical Guidelines of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the Center for Disease Control and the National Institutes of Health. Studies show CBT-I produces the same level of improvement as sleeping medications without the risk of dependency on pills or other adverse side effects. Instead, CBT helps you learn techniques to break the cycle of thoughts, feelings and behaviors that interfere with restful sleep. These powerful tools and knowledge produce a lasting and more permanent improvement in sleep patterns.
How can I be successful using SHUTi?
SHUTi is very effective – regardless of whether you’ve been suffering from insomnia for months or for many years – regardless of your particular sleep difficulty is falling sleep, waking in the night, awakening too early or any combination of these – regardless of your current insomnia severity. In fact, SHUTi is the only online CBT-I program with 5 published research RCT trials showing positive sleep improvement results. And our most recent published scientific findings have shown evidence of success in broader populations with medical and psychiatric comorbidities, including cancer-survivors and adults at-risk for depression; and the longest-term effects (e.g., sleep improvements lasted 1-year even after program access ended).
Many patients have reported significant improvements in their sleep in a matter of weeks, even those who’ve suffered for years with insomnia and feel they’ve tried everything.
To get the best results, you’ll need a computer or tablet with Internet access and your commitment of time and effort to complete the SHUTi learning sessions and homework assignments.
How long does the program take?
Once a week – for 6 weeks, you will complete one (1) Core online learning and strategy session. Each of these sequenced Core sessions includes about 40 minutes of engaging interactions, videos, quizzes and other helpful information designed to help you improve your sleep. To help SHUTi tailor the program for you, we also recommend you take 2 – 3 minutes each day to complete a short online Sleep Diary. Between Core sessions, you will practice the new strategies and techniques you have learned and incorporate them into your daily routine.
The majority of SHUTi users complete the program with a total time investment of under 7 hours over a period of 6 weeks – resulting in a clinically significant change in their insomnia!
To help you feel confident in your ability to maintain your improved sleep after the 6-week period, we provide you with an additional 10 – 14 weeks to use and review and program as part of your selected SHUTi subscription. You’ll be given an option to extend your access further if you wish at the conclusion of your current subscription.
Is the program flexible? Do I have to complete it all at once?
Yes, the SHUTi program is designed to be completed online at your convenience and schedule. Keep in mind that the SHUTi team of sleep experts is committed to delivering an effective, scientifically validated program modeled after successful face-to-face Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for insomnia. That means that the SHUTi program programmatically enforces at least a week between each of the sequenced Core learning sessions to ensure you have ample opportunities to practice the new techniques you’ve learned.
Is SHUTi™ right for me?
Although SHUTi™ has been shown to help many people with insomnia, no one program is right for everyone. Keep reading to see if SHUTi is a good fit for you:
Sleep disorders other than insomnia (e.g., sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, periodic leg movements) should be treated before using SHUTi. If you continue to have insomnia symptoms after successful treatment of your other sleep disorder, talk to your doctor about using SHUTi to resolve remaining insomnia symptoms.
If you have another medical problem (e.g., diabetes) or mental health problem (e.g., depression), be sure to first consult with your doctor about its impact on insomnia and the appropriateness of your using SHUTi™. For example, if sleep restriction and consolidation is contraindicated due to your medical condition (e.g., you are pregnant or have been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder), you should not use this program without specific permission from your doctor. Many people with co-occurring medical and psychiatric problems have done well using SHUTi, but ask your doctor first, especially if your condition is unstable.
There are also a few family and work situations that may make it difficult to follow (and benefit from) some of the SHUTi recommendations. If your schedule prevents you from keeping a set sleep schedule most nights (e.g. rotating shift work), you will not be able to use one of the most effective SHUTi program strategies. Consider using SHUTi at a time when your schedule will allow you to establish a regular bedtime and arising time.
Can I Continue to Take My Sleep Medications While Using SHUTi?
When starting SHUTi, many people ask about medications. In published research studies, SHUTi has been found to be very effective whether medications are used or not. As a self-help program, SHUTi does not provide instructions regarding changing your medication regimen and you will not be asked to change or stop using your sleep medication. Instead, if you are interested in reducing or eliminating your medications, you should speak with your doctor, let him/her know you are using SHUTi, and talk about coming up with a plan on how best to do this.
Interestingly, fewer SHUTi users reported taking medications following use of the program compared to those who did not have access to SHUTi, even though medication use is not specifically addressed in SHUTi.
For What Age Group is SHUTi™ Appropriate?
SHUTi™ is appropriate for adults who have basic computer skills. It has most consistently been tested in adults 18 to 65, although two small pilot studies included adults over 65 and found it to be effective when older adults also participated. If you are over 65, contact your doctor for recommendations on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for insomnia for your particular sleep difficulties. Ask whether your doctor recommends any modifications to a CBT for insomnia program (e.g., allowing an afternoon nap).
Will insurance pay for SHUTi?
Each insurance provider is different, so you may want to check with your particular insurance provider. Also, if you have a Flexible Spending Account or Health Savings Account with your healthcare plan, you may be able to use it. You may also choose to talk to your employer about whether they offer a wellness reimbursement.
What does SHUTi cost?
SHUTi costs just a few dollars each week. For SHUTi Self-Help users, the cost of a 26-week subscription comes out to $5.73 cents per week. This is far less than the typical insurance co-pay for six face-to-face therapy sessions or long-term medication cost.

Does SHUTi work?
Yes. Referenced as “the best-studied program” by Harvard Health, SHUTi has been scientifically validated across 5 Randomized Controlled Trials to show positive sleep improvement results. Using prospectively collected diary entries for data accuracy and comprehensive intent-to-treat analysis, it has been proven to reduce sleep onset (i.e., time it takes to fall asleep), reduce wake after sleep onset (i.e., minutes awake during the night), reduce number of awakenings, and improve sleep efficiency (i.e., percentage of time asleep while in bed) at statistically significant levels with large effect sizes. Research outcomes also included significant improvements in comorbid fatigue, depression, anxiety, and mental health quality of life. And participants maintained their improvements when measured at both 6 and 12 months after treatment (longest term published effects).
Our most recent published scientific findings were published in the world-renowned journal, The Lancet, in February 2015. In the study, SHUTi showed evidence of success in broader populations with medical and psychiatric comorbidities, specifically adults at-risk for depression.
As part of our continuing commitment to evidence-based science, SHUTi is being further evaluated as part of an additional 5 RCTs trials. Participating institutions, prior and current, include the University of Virginia Health System, University of Virginia Cancer Center, University of Pittsburg Medical Center, Black Dog Institute in Australia, Danish Cancer Society in Denmark, and University of Bergen in Norway.
Who’s behind SHUTi?
After years of research studies and treating insomnia patients, Dr. Charles Morin, a leading authority on insomnia treatment, along with others in the field of sleep science, had no doubt that Cognitive Behavior Therapy for insomnia was effective. However, based on the number of people with insomnia, there were not nearly enough trained clinicians to provide CBT-I. So, he, along with a team of international experts in insomnia, behavior change, and digital health, created SHUTi to expand access to affordable and effective behavioral health care for insomnia.
